How do I Back Up and Restore My Custom Menus and Toolbars?

Question

You have customized the Menus and/or Toolbars in ACT! and want to ensure that those custom settings are not lost.

Answer

The Backup tool in ACT! will back up your database and many of the files associated with it. However, it does not back up custom menus and toolbars. For more information about the Backup tool in ACT!, please see the following document:

Settings for custom Menus and Toolbars are saved in the Windows registry. We have provided an option in the ACT! Data Diagnostic Tool (ACTDIAG) that will make a backup of the custom ACT! settings in the registry.

1. Exit ACT!.

2. Click the Windows Start button, and then click Run. The Run dialog appears.

3. Type actdiag into the Open field, and then click OK. The ACT! Data Diagnostic Tool launches.

4. Click on the Options menu, and then click Back Up ACT! Registry. An ACT! Data Diagnostic Tool dialog appears that gives you several options of ACT! data you can back up.

5. Ensure the Menus and Toolbars option is enabled. Also, enable any other ACT! settings you would like to backup, and then click the Backup ACT! Registry button. A Save As dialog appears.

6. Navigate to a location (through the Save In field) where you would like this information saved. (the Windows Desktop is suggested) Give the backup file a unique File name, and then click Save.

7. The resulting backup will have the file extension REG, and have the Windows registry icon. To restore the ACT! Registry backup, double-click the backup (.reg) file.
